Special Events

 

September is National Literacy & Library Card Month To celebrate this event, Manatee Libraries is offering a chance for all school-aged children who sign up for a Manatee Libraries’ or Area 52* card by September 30 to enter for a chance to win a new Kindle Paperwhite (first prize) or Book Package (second prize). Sign up online or at any of our six locations. *Area 52 card registrants must be between the ages of 12 and 18.

 

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (SEPT 15 to OCT 15) Recognizes the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. See PP. 4 & 5 for an overview of our programming taking place throughout Manatee Libraries in September & October, which includes our DWN Voyagers Opening Reception and cooking demos.

 

Hiring Fair This annual event brings over 40 companies and agencies under one roof. Resume consultations available before and during the event. Laptops available to fill out online applications. Career resource guides available. Door prizes and free coffee. MON, SEPT 25, 1 to 4 PM @ DWN

 

Get Hooked on Fishing Spend an afternoon engulfed in fishing SAT, NOV 4 @ DWN. The event kicks off with a shark presentation by Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, 12 to 1 PM, followed by a conservation program with Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, including a catch and release skill station, 2 to 3 PM (all ages). In addition, teens are invited to a 3D-printing workshop, where they will design custom fishing lures, 3 to 5 PM (space limited for this event). Look for additional activities in our November events calendar.

Bot Bowl Shootout Challenge Come watch Area 52’s Robotics Team compete against local high school teams in a robotics hockey challenge. SAT, NOV 11, 1 to 4 PM @ DWN. Thinking Money Traveling Exhibit* A museum-quality traveling exhibition, providing information for tweens, teens and their parents, caregivers and educators to help them make smart financial choices. Topics include saving, spending and avoiding fraud—in a way that is not only understandable, but fun. Interactive iPad content and other fun, hands-on activities focus on wants vs. needs, earning and paying interest, preparing for rainy/sunny day, imagining your future self and avoiding financial fraud. Learn how to choose healthy but affordable snacks in “What’s My Snack? Hispanic Heritage Month Programs

 

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America and their achievements, starting with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. The month-long celebration begins on September 15 because it is the day Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua declared their independence in 1821. Mexico, Chile and Belize followed shortly after with their declaration of independence taking place on September 16, 18 and 21, respectively. Communities nationwide have been honoring the event since 1968 by taking part in festivals, activities and educational programs of which 55 million people or 17% of the American population identify. Come celebrate at one or more of the programs Manatee Libraries has planned!

Latin/Flamenco/World guitarist, David Munoz, and multi-instrumentalist female vocalist, Elise Amaral, of Latin Rendezvous will perform a wide variety of popular music from the Americas, Europe and around the world. Spanish Cuisine for Two Cooking Demo Chef Warren Caterson inspires your inner chef by cooking some recipes from his award-winning cookbook, Table for Two: The Cookbook for Couples and Table for Two: Back for Seconds. Chef Warren will explore the cuisines of Andalucía, Basque Country, Valencia, Catalonia (where the first cookbook in Spain was written) and more.
