Do's and Don'ts of Emergency Flood Preparation

DO's:

  • DO Make a Plan: Know your evacuation zone routes and plan for a safe destination before a storm hits
  • DO Prepare Emergency Supplies with necessities
  • DO Visit local media for the latest updates and sign up for Manatee County Emergency Alerts
  • DO Evacuate when officials send alerts
  • DO Shut off utilities(water, gas, and electricity) in your home if it is safe to reach, before evacuating your home

    Don'ts:

    • Don't Drive in flood waters, if flood waters rise around your whole vehicle, immediately exit the vehicle and walk to higher ground if it is safe. In moving water you could be taken by flood water along with your vehicle. It only takes 2 feet of moving water to carry most vehicles.
    • Don't Walk into moving water, the force of 6 inches can make you fall. If needing to get through water use a stick to check the firmness of the ground below.
