Friends 2026 Travel & Lecture Series: "Pelican Rescue"

Living on the water in Florida for more than 40 years has given Jeanette Edwards a deep appreciation for our native birds, especially the Florida brown pelican. After watching many of these iconic birds struggle with fishing gear entanglement near her home, she founded the Friends of the Pelicans in 2018. The goals of the organization are to prevent fishing line entanglement at fishing piers, intervene when birds get hooked, educate anglers and the public on how to prevent and mitigate entanglement, and rescue of entangled birds. Jennette is a full-time CPA who balances her career with her passion, recruiting volunteers and professionals to assist with “the silent, unseen problem” that kills 30% of brown pelicans before they reach the age of one year. Doors open at 1:30 PM. Sponsored by the Friends of the Island Library
