A Day in the Life

I spent a day with Jo Ewain, Supervisor with our Manatee County Meter Services Team, to get a first-hand look at a day in the life of a Meter Reader. “Each day, Meter Readers do a lot of walking, perform the meter reading and record the data on a handheld device. It’s definitely not a desk job. There’s a lot of stooping, bending & physical work involved with the job. Our Meter Readers have to love being active and want to be outdoors. They also have to be fast at what they do,“ said Jo. “Meter Readers at Manatee County read between 400-450 meters per day.”

Jo

Jo began with Manatee County 19 years ago, and has been promoted into the position of Meter Services Supervisor from Meter Services Technician, leading the team in training, coaching and developing new employees. Jo serves as a valuable source for anyone considering entering the field.

Jo’s supervisor, Matt Vandlandingham, Manatee County’s Meter Services Superintendent insists “This job isn’t for everyone. It’s not easy.” But also, stated that working with the county offered him the opportunity for advancement and the freedom of an independent working environment that other careers did not. “I knew right away that this was the job for me and the experience has led me to excel in my career.” stated Matt.
