The majority of the 13 acre “North Pine Island” property abuts the north side of the existing Pine Island Preserve, which is on the Braden River on the side south of State Road 64. The acquisition of North Pine Island protects high quality native habitat and water quality in the Braden River, a tributary to the Manatee River. The addition is primarily mangroves with a small portion of mesic flatwood.
The property is only a quarter mile from the Critical Wildlife Area (CWA), a mangrove island rookery which supports Tampa Bay’s only coastal colony of wood storks. Acquisition of North Pine Island protects the wildlife species that reside in and migrate to the area.
The site contributes conservation value to the Manatee River Corridor, a strategic conservation corridor extending from Tampa Bay and Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve to the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Purchase of North Pine Island completes conservation of the island that is Pine Island Preserve, allowing for increased efficiency and effectiveness of managing the resource.
