Florida's Early Freedom Settlements -- AMERICA 250
Journey through Florida’s early history to explore the remarkable communities built by people who sought and sustained freedom long before the Civil War. This program traces the development of settlements such as Fort Mose—the first legally recognized free black settlement within what became the United States—and Angola in Manatee County. Participants will discover how these communities were formed, the settlers who helped build them, and how their stories continue to shape Florida today.
