From the Angola Maroon Community on the Manatee River to the Wider Caribbean: The Heritage of Freedom-Seeking Peoples
Angola, a small village of formerly enslaved and free people of African heritage and Seminoles, was located on the Manatee River in the early 1800s. It was destroyed during the Seminole Wars and some of its inhabitants were able to escape to the Bahamas. Centuries later, their descendants return to Bradenton each year to celebrate the heritage of Angola and Bahamian culture. New College anthropology professor Dr. Uzi Baram and event organizer Daphney Towns, of Oaktree Community Outreach, will discuss this incredible story and cultural celebration.
