HOLIDAY COLLECTIONS

When a holiday falls on a scheduled pickup day, garbage, recycling and yard waste will be collected one day later than your scheduled pickup day for the rest of that week. Regular collection days resume the following Monday.

GARBAGE DO'S & DON'TS

DO prepare your garbage properly:
  • BAG IT: Use sturdy garbage bags.
  • BUNDLE IT: Materials must be bundled and tied in 4-foot lengths and placed curbside with your garbage for collection.
  • CAN IT: Place garbage in 32-gallon cans
  • Bags, bundles or 32-gallon garbage cans must not weigh more than 50 pounds each.
  • Garbage must be placed at the curb before 6 a.m.

      • WHAT SIZE GARBAGE CAN SHOULD I BE USING?
      • Waste must be contained in watertight plastic bags at least 1.5 mil thick, or cans of 32-gallon capacity.
      • The total weight must not exceed 50 pounds.
      • Cardboard boxes are not suitable containers. Empty cardboard boxes will be removed if they are broken down and bundled.
      • Please do not place household waste or yard waste inside the blue recycling bins.

      WHAT ARE MY GARBAGE SERVICE DAYS?

      Garbage Pickup Schedule
      Residential household waste is collected twice per week: either every Monday/Thursday, or Tuesday/Friday. Use our Resident Information Tool or view the map to determine your garbage collection days.

      WHAT TIME IS MY GARBAGE PICKUP?

      Your waste must be placed in one location, not more than three feet from the curb or road, before 6:00 a.m. on the day of collection. Residential collection can be anytime between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.


      FURNITURE AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS

      • Up to two large items (furniture, mattress, tires, etc.) can be placed at the curb with your regular garbage and picked up for free. This does not include white goods (refrigerator, stove, washer, etc.  and E-Scrap (TVs, printers, microwaves, etc.), which require a special pickup.
      • Call Utilities Customer Service at (941) 792-8811 to schedule a special pickup for white goods, E-Scrap or more than two large items. 


      WHITE GOODS/APPLIANCES 

      • White goods are large appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, dryers, stoves, water heaters and freezers.
      • There is a minimal charge for curbside disposal per appliance or item.
      • You may also elect to dispose of your item at the landfill for a fee or utilize your one free annual pick up.

      HOW DO I SCHEDULE A PICKUP FOR TIRES?
      • Two tires may be placed at the curb with your garbage.
      • More than two tires require a special pickup.
      • Semi and equipment tires will not be collected curbside.
      • Please note: Tires are collected in a separate truck.
      • You may also bring your tires to the Landfill for a fee or utilize your one (1) free annual pick up per year. There is a 60 cubic yard limit (L 40' x W 8' x H 6').

      CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION MATERIAL

      • Properly prepared residential construction & demolition material will be picked up for free on your residential garbage collection days.
      • Material must be in bags or 32-gallon cans less than 50 pounds, not protruding from the top of the container, or tied and bundled, and less than 4 feet length.
      • Construction & demolition material can also be collected with your residential free annual. There is a 60 cubic yard limit (L 40' x W 8' x H 6').

      • Construction demolition material can be hauled to the Lena Road Landfill for a fee.

      CARPET

      • Carpet and padding must be rolled & tied in four (4) foot lengths and placed curbside with your garbage for pick-up.
      • Carpet & padding must not weigh more than 50 pounds per roll.

      RECYCLE ALL TOGETHER, RECYCLE RIGHT!!

      Manatee County uses single-stream recycling. All clean recyclable paper and containers are put together in the recycle cart eliminating the need for sorting. It's easy and convenient. Once collected, all materials are separated for re-use at a materials recycling facility. 

      RECYCLING PICKUP SCHEDULE

      HOW TO PLACE YOUR RECYLING CART

      • Recycling cart is for recyclables only.
      • The cart must be 3 feet from the curb as well as all other obstructions, car, mailboxes, and garbage cans.
      • Place the cart with the arrow facing the street.
      • Recycling cart must be at the curb by 6am.
      • Arrange materials loosely in the recycling cart. Materials packed too tightly may remain in the recycling cart after it is dumped.

      HOW TO REQUEST A RECYCLE CART

      If you are a new homeowner in the need of a new recycling cart or your recycling cart has been damaged in anyway, please take the following steps:

      • Please call the Utilities Department at 941-792-8811.
      • Your 64-gallon recycle cart will be delivered within 3 weeks of placing the order.
      • Please make sure your damaged recycling cart is empty and placed at the curbside on your recycling day. For example: if your recycling day is on a Tuesday, you will take your recycling cart out for the next 3 Tuesday’s before 6 a.m.

      HOW DO I RECYCLE CARDBOARD?

      To recycle cardboard boxes at home:

      • Break down all boxes and place them in your recycle cart.
      • The boxes must be loose fitting in the cart.
      • They may not extend over the top of the cart more than six (6) inches.

      CLOTHING RECYCLING

      In order to keep textiles out of the waste stream and ending up in a landfill, we can redirect our textiles and clothing to another use and re-purpose these materials. Consider donating or selling these items.
      • Donate to your favorite Charity thrift store
      • Buy, sell, or trade through social media outlets.
      • Pass these items to a friend or family member.
      • Bring items Monday - Saturday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. to the blue textile drop off box at the Manatee County Lena Road landfill, 3333 Lena rd. Bradenton
      • The following items are allowed: clean clothing, shoes, accessories, and linens.

      WHERE TO DROP OFF RECYCLING

      Recycling drop-off locations are for Manatee County residential use only.

      If your condo complex, RV park or other multi-family residence does not offer recycling service, or if your recyclables are too large for your recycle cart, you may drop recyclable items off at the following locations:

      These locations are for recycling materials only. All items must be placed inside the container. All cardboard must be clean, broken down or flattened to be recycled.

      YARD WASTE

      Yard waste is vegetative matter resulting from yard and landscaping maintenance of your own property. This includes materials such as tree branches, leaves, grass clippings or palm fronds. Prepare yard waste properly to expedite pickup.

      YARD WASTE PICKUP SCHEDULE
      All Yard Waste is picked up on Wednesdays, unless there is a change due to holiday schedule. Properly prepared yard waste placed no more than three (3) feet from the curb or road will be collected once a week between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

      YARD WASTE DO'S AND DON'TS

      Do you prepare your yard waste properly:

      • BAG IT: Use sturdy garbage bags.
      • BUNDLE IT: If you don’t wish to use garbage cans or garbage bags, you must put yard waste in bundles no longer than 4 feet in length.
        • Bundles cannot contain branches large then 6 inches in diameter. Any branch larger than 6 inches in diameter must be cut in half lengthwise, tied, and bundled.
        • Tie bundles with heavy-duty string.
      • CAN IT: Put yard waste in 32-gallon garbage cans. Yard waste must not extend above the top of the can.
      • LARGE QUANTITIES: For very large quantities of yard waste too difficult to bundle, a special collection can be arranged for a fee or you may use your one free annual collection.
      • Bags, bundles or 32-gallon garbage cans must not weigh more than 50 pounds each.
       DON'T put the following out with yard waste:
      • Garbage
      • Animal Waste
      • Fruit
      • Mulch

      The above items must be placed in the garbage.

      LANDFILL

      You may also take your yard waste to the landfill for a fee.

      FREE ANNUAL

      • Free Annual / Special Pick-up: Each residential address located in unincorporated Manatee County can utilize one (1) collection per year for solid waste at no additional cost. You can use this service for the collection of more than two (2) large items or too much yard waste to bundle. Additional special pick-ups are available for an additional service fee.
      • To see if you qualify for a free annual, please call customer services at 941-792-8811.
      • One per year (Oct. 1st - Sept. 30th) per residential address.
      • There is a 60 cubic yard limit (L 40' x W 8' x H 6')

      EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE

      • There is no limit on the amount of yard waste that can be picked up as long as it is properly bundled and properly placed out at the curb.
      • The removal of large amounts of your unprepared yard waste is not part of the residential collection service charge and is considered an Extraordinary Service.
      • If you choose to have the hauler pick up your unprepared yard waste, an Extraordinary Service charge will appear on your next Manatee County Utilities Department bill.
      • Residents may also take the yard waste to the Lena Road Landfill (for a fee) in the own vehicle.
                

      ELECTRONIC SCRAP & HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

      HHW

      Common products found in your home that are labeled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive or explosive are common household hazardous waste (HHW). You can tell if a product is hazardous if words such as POISON, DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION appear on the label. The most common products include:

      HOW CAN I DISPOSE OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE?

      Manatee County offers FREE Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) service to Manatee County residents only. HHW is unwanted household products labeled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, dangerous, warning, or caution. You may take your HHW to the Lena Road Landfill, on Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and every third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do not dispose of any of the above with your regular trash. The hauler will not pick them up.

      HHW AND E-SCRAP MONTHLY COLLECTIONS

      Third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Lena Road Landfill, 3333 Lena Road, Bradenton (3rd traffic light east of I-75 off State Road 64).

      For the safety of our customers and staff, you must follow these guidelines when bringing your materials:

      • While entering the Landfill, you must obey all signage. 
      • Wait to be guided by Manatee County staff on where to stop your vehicle.
      • For your safety, once stopped and turn off the ignition.
      • Manatee County staff will ask you to explain what household hazardous waste you have brought, and you can place your materials on the cart provided.
      • Once the materials are safely off loaded, Manatee County staff will instruct you when to start your vehicle.
      • Obey all signages when exiting the building. Follow the exit signs to leave the Landfill.

      HOW TO SAFELY TRANSPORT HHW

      • Transport items in the trunk or rear of your vehicle in sturdy boxes  or containers that can be thrown away. Boxes may be lined with kitty litter or an open garbage bag, this will ensure that your items don’t leak into your vehicle.
      • Do not mix chemicals together.
      • Do not smoke around chemicals.
      • Keep products in original containers with label intact.
      • Label products not in original containers.
      • Secure products so they won’t leak!
      • Store products away from the passenger compartment of your vehicle.
      • Don’t store products in the trunk of your car before bringing them to the collection.

      BATTERIES

      Alkaline batteries (regular use batteries) that contain no mercury do not pose a threat to the environment and may be thrown away as garbage.

      All other batteries such as rechargeable, lead-acid, lithium and Ni-cad batteries are considered household hazardous waste and can be brought to the Lena Road Landfill Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and the 3rd Saturday of the month from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

      Rechargeable Batteries are fire hazards:
      Lithium ion and Nicad batteries do not belong in your trash or recycle cart. They can cause fires if damaged. 

      PAINT CANS

      Paint Cans: CANNOT be disposed of in the regular garbage because of containing liquid. It is safe to throw away empty/dry cans. However, if liquid paint remains in the can, please use it, donate it, or dry it out before putting it in the garbage. 

      BIO-HAZARDOUS MATERIAL & SHARPS

      Bio-hazardous materials are sharps, and absorbent items (gauze, cotton, bandages, etc.) that are saturated with blood or other regulated body fluids considered to be biomedical waste and managed in accordance with state rules.

      • Sharps are defined as items having the potential to puncture or lacerate, such as syringes with attached needles and disposable lancets.
      • The Health Department is the only site that offers a Sharps Collection Program in Manatee County.
      • You may obtain an approved Sharp container at the Manatee County Health Department located at 410 6th Ave. East in Bradenton.
      • This program is open to the public and free of charge.

      DO NOT place in the recycle cart, give to anyone else, flush down the toilet, or put in the trash.

      MEDICAL DISPOSAL

      PROJECT DRUG DROP: CITIZEN MEDICATION DISPOSAL PROGRAM

      The Sheriff’s Office will accept unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medication for proper disposal. Syringes and liquids are not accepted.

      Citizens may take non-liquid medications (pills only and inhalers) to the following locations:

      • 407 57th Ave. E., Bradenton. Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
      • 616 67th ST. Circle E., Bradenton, Monday - Friday , 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
      • 1115 10th Street W, Palmetto. Monday - Friday, 24/7 hours/ days (Lobby)

      Check your local Pharmacy for return of liquid medications.

      If you can't turn in medication, don't flush it!

      • Keep in the original container. This will help identify the contents if they are accidentally ingested.
      • Mark out your name and prescription number for safety.
      • For pills: add some water or soda to start dissolving them.
      • For liquids: add something inedible like cat litter or dirt.
      • Close the lid and secure with duct tape or packing tape.
      • Place bottle(s) inside a non-see through container (such as a plastic laundry bottle), tape the container closed and place in the trash.

      DO NOT place medication in the recycle bin, give it to someone else, flush it down the toilet, or put it in the trash.

       

      E-SCRAP

      The term "E-Scrap" is applied to consumer electronic equipment that is no longer wanted. Many components in electronics equipment contain hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. While in use, these hazardous materials do not present a problem, but if discarded improperly pose an environmental threat.

      HOW CAN I DISPOSE OF E-SCRAP?

      Residential E-Scrap can be placed at the curb for a fee. 

      For Manatee County Residents only:

      There is no fee if you bring your E-scrap materials to the Lena Road Landfill Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and every third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Manatee County businesses wishing to dispose of large amounts of E-scrap materials should call (941) 708-8561 for more information.
