County Commissioners unanimously approve renaming the pool after former
community leader, mentor to Manatee youth

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Jan. 26, 2016) – County Commissioners today unanimously voted to rename the East Bradenton Pool in honor of Willie J. “Bro” Clemons, Jr.

Clemons, who died in 2002, was well known throughout Manatee County as a coach and mentor for many young athletes moving through the Manatee County school system at the former Lincoln High School (now Lincoln Middle) and Southeast High School.

The pool is located at 1119 13th Ave. E., Bradenton. A renaming dedication ceremony will be held later this year for the community. The 25-meter pool features a diving board, a concession area with picnic tables, a wading pool, a splash area and locker room facilities.

The change comes about as a request from County Commissioner Charles Smith, who knew Clemons for many years.

“Bro Clemons was a mentor, a person who cared about people,” Smith said. “I miss him today. “This pool will bring a family together and East Bradenton is a family. It brings history to the forefront.

Several members of the community and members of Clemons’ family recalled him as a mentor and a tremendous leader for the area. Rubonia resident Mary G. Brown thanked Commissioners for taking action to honor Clemons.

“Bro Clemmons was a very respectful person with tenacity,” Brown said. “He wouldn’t leave you hanging. His heart was in Manatee County. God bless him today.”

“This was a great idea by Commissioner Smith,” added Commissioner Betsy Benac. “This is a wonderful honor for someone, but it also brings recognition to this area which is so important. This pool has been underutilized.”
