Accept and recognize the APWA Management and Innovation award for Manatee County Bridge Maintenance Crew.
In 2008 the bridge maintenance crew was established to maintain the 88 County owned bridges with a current replacement value of $70,000,000. The program quickly evolved and developed to much more than just a maintenance crew but to nearly a heavy construction crew. Their experience with other work prior to focusing on bridges allowed them not to be intimidated by any work. In fact we had to hold them back and focus on the best use of our limited man hours for work. They have turned reactionary maintenance done years after defects are detected to repairing everything that needs it at one time. This is more efficient and will also in the long term be cheaper and help extend the life of our bridges by getting to minor repairs before they have become large defects noted on inspection reports.
We also provide a small aggressive proactive bridge maintenance crew. Their focus is to continually move from bridge to bridge with routine housekeeping work. This includes pressure washing top to bottom, close inspection and repair of joint seals as necessary, keeping the signs and guardrails up to current standards, repair of any cracks that become visible following cleaning, repair of any needed concrete areas and sealing of the deck and concrete. These simple but important steps allow close inspection of the bridges on a regular basis in addition to the FDOT inspections.
Having this crew in-house allows us to shift priorities on a moments notice if necessary if an urgent situation arises. We are also at the beginning of a rise in our average bridge health index scores from the FDOT inspection. This rise in scores does come slowly because most bridges are only inspected every 2 years and we will only get the higher scores on the subsequent inspection following our work.
