Background Discussion
Each year the Board of County Commissions considers a platform for supporting Federal Legislation benefiting Manatee County’s transportation, environment, and the economy.  Similar to the state legislative platform, a draft of current and pending legislative issues has been developed to address and position Manatee County for:
  1. Future federal funding support for the Central Manatee Network Alternatives Analysis (CMNAA) recommendations for bridge and corridor improvements;
  2. Pending water quality legislation focusing on remediation and prevention of recurring red tide effects;
  3. Requesting support for clams and oyster restoration;
  4. Opportunities for federal matching appropriations to address the permanent closure of the Piney Point phosphor gypsum stacks;
  5. Support of Port Manatee’s federal legislative agenda which provides indirect benefits to fund the restoration of the County-owned Washington Park borrow pit as a recreational amenity; and
  6. General legislative issues directly benefiting Manatee County Government programs and opportunities.
These draft priorities were developed from Board and outside agency input over the last year. They provide an opportunity for individual members of the County Commission to discuss these items in meetings with members of Congress and their congressional staff, both in terms of their direct language and in general following the intent of the legislative support expressed.

As a draft document, County staff will receive further input and direction during this September 24, 2019, Board meeting.  If there are significant changes and suggestions, those will be added to this Federal Legislative Priorities List and returned for final approval during the October 8, 2019, Board meeting.
