Background Discussion

In 1872, Major George Patten bought the Gamble Plantation for $3,000.  To avoid the high cost of maintaining the aging and decaying mansion, his son, Dudley A. Patten, built a more "modern" house in the 1890s.  Through efforts of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), the house was restored, furnished, and open to the public during special events.

Through an agreement between the State and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the UDC was to maintain the interior of the house, while the State Park Service was responsible for the exterior.  However, the building has been neglected, termites have decimated support structures, and the house is sorely in need of painting.  At this time, there are concerns about the stability of the house and fears that the building will be torn down.

The members of the Manatee County Historical Commission, Inc., fully support the preservation of the Patten House and request that the State does its part in maintaining and keeping the house for future generations.
