Background Discussion
The mission of Manatee Libraries is to nurture imagination, promote lifelong learning, and enrich the community.  The Florida Stories Walking Tour app will support the Manatee Libraries' continued effort to engage our residents in stories surrounding local history and work with community partners on opportunities for learning and enrichment.  The Florida Stories app allows users to learn about the history and heritage of Florida and gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of local communities.

Each walking tour is created under the guidance of Florida Humanities Council.  All tours must be walkable (up to 1.5 miles), include up to 12 significant locations, and have an audio portion for each stop.  Manatee County's tour will encompass the area of the Old Town of Manatee in East Bradenton as it is the oldest inhabited location in Manatee County.  It was also the site of a brief settlement called Angola, formed in the early 1800s by former slaves.  We expect the Old Manatee tour will appeal to residents and visitors of all ages, and will include stops to the Mineral Springs Park, Reflections of Manatee, Manatee Historical Village, the Old Manatee Burying Grounds, and Pelot's Pharmacy.  The tour will be coordinated by Manatee County Public Library's Information Services staff and will partner with staff from Manatee County Historical Resources, Reflections of Manatee, and Bradenton Walking Tours.

The funds from this one-time grant will be used for graphic design, script editing, studio recording fees, voice talent, sound editing and engineering, and promotional materials.  In-kind services will be provided by Manatee County Library staff and its community partners.

The attached document once signed will allow for a release from the Florida Humanities Council of the $5,000.  A Budget Resolution to amend the annual budget for Manatee County, Florida, will be added to the October 23, 2018 consent agenda.
