Background Discussion
Two very rare plants, Florida Golden Aster and Aboriginal Prickly-Apple, are federally listed as endangered species and exist no where else in the world but southwest Florida. Habitat restoration and management practices employed by Manatee County have created conditions within the Preserves where re-introduction of these rare species can occur.  After encouragement from USFWS staff, Parks and Natural Resources Department personnel submitted a project proposal to engage local non-profit partners with experience in re-introduction of these plants and facilitate planting of these species at Perico Preserve and Emerson Point Preserve.  The proposed project will assist in recovery of federally endangered species, add to the quality of the user experiences at the Preserves, and serve as a valuable place for interpretation on rare species in Manatee County.

An award letter was provided to the County (attached).  Because of the relatively small amount of funding, no agreement is necessary according to USFWS staff.  Acceptance is defined as starting work, drawing down of requested funds, or accepting the award via electronic means.  There is not a grant agreement that requires signatures.  The grant is effective from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2020.  The county has pledged to provide $15,000 towards the project via in-kind match of volunteer and staff time which will be tracked by the Parks and Natural Resources Department.
