Approve staff recommendation to locate the North County Aquatics Center at Buffalo Creek Park and return with a conceptual plan for development.
Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department operates three public swimming pools and two stand-alone splash pads.
The popularity of these assets has resulted in a number of challenges in providing quality recreation programming. Currently the three swimming pools service:
Each year, thousands of residents and visitors enjoy these facilities. Over the past two years, modifications to these facilities have been made to provide for maximum use. Portable bulkheads at the G.T. Bray facility have increased competitive / lab swim lanes. The Board of County Commissioners has approved capital and operating funds to convert the John H. Marble Pool to a year round operation.
Currently there is not a County operated public swimming pool north of the Manatee River. This creates a barrier to access for many county residents to quality aquatic programming to include drown prevention, learn to swim, and competitive and recreational swim programs. Our current level of service notes a deficiency in public swimming pools. Currently this is an approved project in the CIP. The first step to move this project forward is to select a site.
Staff is recommending the Buffalo Creek Park as the site for this Aquatic Facility project. The benefits of the site are as follows:
