Background Discussion
From the initial beach restoration in 1992 and five subsequent nourishments, Anna Maria Island, FL, has been proactively managed by Manatee County in partnership with the State of Florida, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  The Anna Maria Island Beach Nourishment Project provides critical storm protection to upland roads and buildings including a hurricane evacuation route for both Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key.  The project is 100% accessible to the public and also provides vital habitat for nesting sea turtles, a wide variety of shorebirds, and other marine life such as the Florida manatee.  Most recently, the 2013-2014 nourishment regionalized two projects and leveraged federal funding to save millions of dollars on mobilization while improving project longevity by creating a uniform beach along five miles of coast.
