Background Discussion

-The Center of Anna Maria Island, located at 407 Magnolia Avenue, Anna Maria, FL, is a 501(c) 3 non profit, primarily servicing the barrier Island cities with Educational, Recreational, and Cultural programs and services for youth, teens, young adults, adults, and seniors.

-The Center has a large enrollment from the Anna Maria Island Elementary school, one of only a handful of elementary schools in the County that relies upon a neighborhood-based facility and not the school site to provide out-of-school time and summer programming for their students.

-On March 9, 2018, the Chairman of the Center Board of Directors  sent a letter requesting assistance with funds for the purchase of two vans to assist with Transportation.  After careful review, a recommendation for one van with a recommended funding award of not to exceed $25,000 from the excess Beach Concessions fund is being proposed.

-Thirty-six percent (36%) of the students participating at the Center are children of parents in the restaurant and lodging industry making wages well below the amount needed to be able to provide full program costs and transportation.

-Outside of walking distance from the school, the students and their parents rely heavily on the ability for transportation to be provided to and from the Center due to varying family work schedules and off island work locations beyond regular school hours.

-Students that are able to be transported to the Center do not then walk home to unsupervised homes after school but rather enter the Center for supervised enriched education programs and a quality cultural learning environment.

-The Center is requesting assistance with funds to allow them to purchase a van to assist with transporting children and adults to and from programming and to reduce the number of trips on an already overloaded roadway that requires multiple trips to and from school which can take up to 45 minutes each to complete.

-The Center is Open Monday-Saturdays with varying hours of service from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm.
