Background Discussion
The Rye Preserve Nature Center opened to the public on January 9, 2016, with a Grand Opening event that attracted over 200 visitors. This new eastern Manatee County resource includes a variety of hands-on exhibits designed to showcase eastern Manatee County's unique uplands habitats and their resident flora and fauna as well as Rye Preserve's history. Exhibits also help to tell the story of Florida's geological history and our human connection to wild Florida through the actions of land managers and the affects of light pollution. The Nature Center itself represents a great community investment as many volunteers and partners worked together to make it happen. The Department's own volunteer Rye Preservers team along with those from MOSAIC, SMR, Florida Forestry Division, Mills Elementary School, and the Palmetto Agriculture Museum all worked together to help improve the interior of the building, review the exhibits, and host the special event.
