Background Discussion

The Florida Library Association (FLA) is a statewide organization that promotes excellence in Florida libraries.  Annually, FLA honors outstanding libraries, individuals, businesses and library supporters during its conference for the quality of their service to their local communities and to the library profession as a whole.  Manatee County Public Library System (MCPLS) is honored to have been recognized in 2016 in the following individual and team awards:

FLA Friends, Foundations and Boards - Outstanding Member

Doris Pope's presidency of the Friends of the Rocky Bluff Library includes a wealth of dedicated service and many accomplishments.  A standout volunteer with endless energy, determination, grace, and business acumen, Doris has raised thousands of dollars from annual author luncheons, bi-annual book sales, raffles, special events, and donations which directly translated into programs, materials, and improvements for the library.  Doris spearheaded a system-wide brainstorming session with all Friends groups participating and worked tirelessly on the Library Foundation's Stephen King/John Grisham event with proceeds added to the County's funding of the new ILS for MCPLS.  Her ability to bring people and groups together to make things happen and generate enthusiasm are among her biggest strengths.  MCPLS is fortunate to have this soft-spoken and modest dynamo heading the Friends of Rocky Bluff Library and sharing her talents with the community.

FLA Betty Davis Miller Youth Services Award for Teen Programming

Manatee County Public Library System received the Betty Davis Miller Youth Services Award for Teen Programming for their "Recycled Dreams" teen fashion show.  Teen designers created wearable fashion using household recycled or repurposed materials and proudly displayed their creations on a runway in the middle of a library.  Youth librarians from all of the branches assisted on the committee, while local costume designers, artists, teachers, and jewelry designers were selected as judges.  Teens participated in a full "project runway" experience with local beauty schools offering support.  A Recycled Robots contest for tweens and teens was also held throughout the system ahead of time with the creations being displayed in the auditorium during the fashion show.

FLA Lifetime Achievement Award

The son of Cecil Beach, who integrated public libraries in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida during the 1950s and 1960s, Kevin Beach was literally raised amongst the stacks.  With a deep and abiding library philosophy, Kevin has dedicated more than 37 years to Manatee County, both in the Manatee libraries and as an adjunct faculty member of the USF Library Science program.  He genuinely believes in the essential need for libraries and the added value of librarians.  Kevin has worked in a series of roles from reference librarian to head of circulation, head of reference, collection development manager, and in 2012 he became the Operations Manager at Central Library.  He played a key role in the Central Library renovation and continues to be an integral part in the current County literacy initiatives.  Kevin is a talented writer and has written articles for the weekly "Speaking Volumes" Bradenton Herald column and is a founding editor of 805 Lit and Arts Journal, the library's quarterly online journal.  He also is a key event coordinator for MCPLS, ranging from the annual Touch a Truck, Recycled Dreams teen fashion show, and ManaCon Comic Convention, to Star Wars Reads Day and Reading with the Rays.  Kevin Beach has had a lasting impact not only on the community, but also upon literacy and librarians over a career which has spanned decades.

FLA Library of the Year

The Manatee County Public Library System was recognized as the Florida Library of the Year because it has reinvented and reenergized itself, creating new roles in the community that have in turn led to record-breaking use, a deeper community engagement, and success in reaching traditional non-library users.  The MCPLS has six locations and a vital online presence with virtual resources supporting a culturally and economically diverse community.  The scope and nature of programs and services provided by MCPLS reflect the ever-changing needs of the community it serves.  The award winning ManaCon Comics Convention, now in its sixth year, drew an enthusiastic crowd of over 2,000 teens and family members.  Other exciting and well-attended programs included Touch a Truck, Star Wars Reads Day, Millennial Pop Up event, Creative Aging art series, and a successful Job Fair and Business Expo.  Additionally, MCPLS became the first public library to be an online publisher for a new online literary and art journal, 805 (www.805lit.org).  MCPLS participates in many local initiatives aimed at improving early childhood literacy and encouraging young students to connect with science and the arts.  Library staff are also very involved in FLA, ALA, PLA, and the Tampa Bay Library Consortium by serving in leadership roles and presenting workshops and seminars.
