Background Discussion

Slavery was abolished in the United States in 1863 with the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and it was not until two years later, in June 1865, that enslaved African Americans in Texas learned the civil war had ended and slavery had been abolished. The news was received with such joy and jubilation that June 19th became known as “Juneteenth” or “Emancipation Day.”

On June 18, 2016,  in a collaborative effort, the Bradenton-Sarasota Chapter of the Links, Incorporated and the Unconditional Love for Children Foundation (ULC) will join others across the nation in celebrating the 151st Anniversary of Juneteenth.

Shirley Miller, Brenda Belsito, and other representatives of the Bradenton-Sarasota Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will be in attendance to accept the Proclamation.
