Background Discussion
  • On May 16, 2017, representatives from Florida Power and Light (FPL) met with appropriate staff to discuss their SolarNow program.  The SolarNow Program is a way for FPL customers to participate in a voluntary program that supports the development of solar energy projects in local communities.  Community solar projects, like solar trees and canopies, are constructed in local public areas, such as parks, zoos, and museums.  FPL installs, operates, and maintains these projects which generate clean renewable energy at no cost to the county.
  • Due to the number of participants enrolled in the voluntary program, Manatee County is eligible for four to five solar trees and one to two canopies.
  • Potential plans are for solar trees to be placed at the Braden River and Rocky Bluff libraries.  The canopy(s) to be installed at Robinson Preserve.
  • We have asked Florida Power and Light representatives to join us today to share information about the SolarNow program.  An agreement with details on the program will be brought before the Board at a future date.
