Background Discussion

Sulfur Fire at Port Manatee

On Wednesday, April 26th at approximately 7:30 p.m., a sulfur fire was reported at Port Manatee (2054 Piney Point Rd.). As part of the response efforts, portions of U.S. 41 were closed in both directions due to “low visibility conditions” being created in the area. The Manatee County Hazmat Team, Sheriff’s Office, and local fire departments were among those that responded to the incident. It was determined that the fire “might have been possibly caused by the dryness or possible spontaneous combustion issues where the sulfur pile is offloaded at the port.”

Callaghan Tire Fire

Much of the incident was captured by drone film footage. Chief Gorski, Battalion Chief Gould, and Captain Bloski can provide more details and characterize the incident.
