Authorization to set a public hearing on January 26, 2016, to adopt a Resolution naming the Manatee County East Bradenton Pool in honor of Willie J. "Bro" Clemons, Jr.
Florida Statute 125
On June 24, 1993, the Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution R-93-156 providing policies and procedures for honoring individuals and organizations by the naming of public facilities.
Willie J. Clemons, Jr., was well known throughout Manatee County as a coach and mentor for many young athletes moving through the Manatee County school system at the former Lincoln High School, now Lincoln Middle, and Southeast High School. "Bro" Clemons, as he preferred to be called, graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960 and from Florida A&M University in 1964.
Mr. Clemons was active in the community, serving on boards for organizations such as the Florida Sickle Cell Foundation and directing youth agencies including the Palmetto Youth Center, 13th Avenue Community Center, and the Police Athletic League.
Mr. Clemons touched many lives, including many of Manatee County's more notable residents, including three-time Super Bowl champion Henry Lawrence who played for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders and Mr. Mickey Presha, Executive Director of Manatee County Rural Health. Mr. Presha honored Mr. Clemons in his April 20, 2004, obituary memorial in the April 23, 2004, Herald Tribune article with the quote reflecting on Mr. Clemons as a "mother, father, a friend to everyone in this community, when you say Bro Clemons, you think kids."
To honor the passing of this gentleman in April 2004, Commissioner Charles Smith has requested Board consideration to rename the Manatee County East Bradenton pool in memory of Willie J. "Bro" Clemons, Jr., and affix a memorial plaque containing Mr. Clemons' engraved portrait and brief facts about his life history at the entrance to the pool (example memorial plaque attached).
