Background Discussion
On September 15, 2018, Chase Coyner, age 17, and Matthew Powers, age 15, lost their lives in a car crash at the intersection of State Road 64 and Greyhawk Boulevard on their way to homecoming at Lakewood Ranch High School.
During their 2020 session, the Florida Legislature took action to honor Messrs. Coyner and Powers by designating, upon its completion, the roundabout at State Road 64 and Pope Road/Greyhawk Boulevard in Manatee County as the “Chase Coyner and Matthew Powers Memorial Roundabout.”
Section 334.071, Florida Statutes, provides that when the Legislature designates a transportation facility for honorary or memorial purposes, the Florida Department of Transportation is required to place markers for the facility. Section 334.071(3), Florida Statutes, provides that a city or county must pass a resolution in support of a particular honorary designation before the Florida Department of Transportation places the road markers.
Adoption of the proposed resolution will provide the County's support needed to confirm the designation and allow the State place appropriate markers.
Staff recommends adoption of Resolution R-20-129.
