On September 24, 2019, at the Board of County Commissioners regular meeting, the County Attorney's Office and the Neighborhood Services Department presented information on various aspects of panhandling.
The focus at that meeting was to discuss a potential pedestrian safety ordinance designed to enhance the safety of vehicular traffic and pedestrians within the rights-of-way.
Additionally, the Board asked to have further discussion on the potential social service programs funded by Manatee County and their current impact on addressing homelessness and the potential of reducing panhandling.
Further, the board asked to consider a public awareness campaign designed to provide alternatives for citizens when confronted with panhandling in the public roads and rights-of-way. The campaign would also provide additional resources for the persons in need.
