Agenda Item #10 Subject Adoption of Proclamation Designating October 15, 2020, as White Cane Awareness Day in Manatee County Briefings None Contact and/or Presenter Information Board of County Commissioners Action Requested Adopt Proclamation designating October 15, 2020, as "White Cane Awareness Day" in Manatee County, Florida. Enabling/Regulating Authority Background Discussion This Proclamation will be accepted by a representative of the Lighthouse Vision Loss Education Center. Lighthouse Vision Loss Education Center’s mission is to educate and empower those affected by vision loss so they may enjoy happy, healthy and independent lives. Their vision is to transform their community so those with vision loss have the opportunity to participate, contribute, and rise to their fullest potential. Since 1985, the Lighthouse has been the only accredited not-for-profit agency providing Vision Rehabilitation in our five-county region. Lighthouse programs are open to individuals, from children to elderly, experiencing vision loss and are provided at no-cost to the recipient. Lighthouse masters level and nationally certified instructors provide training for more than 500 clients in Adjustment to Vision Loss, Orientation and Mobility, Assistive Technology, Vocational Rehabilitation, Children and Young Adults.
