Mark Simpson, Water Manager, 5258
Authorization for Chairman to execute the State Financial Assistance Agreement between the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Manatee County for the Water Treatment Plant Biofiltration Unit.
Section 125.01 Florida Statutes, and Chapter 63-1598, Laws of Florida, as amended.
The construction will include construction of six (6) new Biological Filter Elements to include a new filter backwash pumping system, new filter backwash air scour system, a backwash clearwell structure, new building for housing the filter elements (including electrical room), new backwash holding pond, meters, valves, piping to interconnect to existing treatment process, instrumentation and control system integrated with existing plant SCADA, and integration with the existing on-site emergency power system.
The main driver for the biological treatment unit is the reduction of taste and odor issues, which can cause residents to turn to other sources for drinking water (bottled water, point of use treatment devices, etc) at substantial added expense. However, it also serves as another barrier in the treatment process assisting in the removal of many trace constituents (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, etc.) without the use of added treatment chemicals.
The grant, in the amount of $500,000 will be utilized to offset contractual services costs associated with the project.
