Background Discussion

The Palma Sola Boat Ramp is a popular facility providing direct access for boaters into Palma Sola Bay. This facility was constructed by the City of Bradenton in 2008 under an agreement which called for the County to reimburse the City up to $70,565.00 for construction of the concrete boat ramp and dock and assume maintenance responsibilities for same.

Although an official transfer did not occur, County and City staff have worked together since 2008 to address operational issues associated with the facility including the unanticipated deposition of sand along this section of the shoreline. 

In 2010, the City of Bradenton added a second dock structure to the facility. 

The recommendation for the County to assume ownership of the facility will allow the Parks and Natural Resources Department to perform certain short-term modifications to improve the functionality of the facility in addition to initiating engineered planning for a comprehensive redesign to increase its' overall capacity and efficiency and to address issues that were not anticipated as part of the original design.

When completed, the newly engineered design will increase boaters' usability of the facility  in addition to minimizing continued maintenance efforts and expenses.

The need for additional boater access as the demand increases and the population of boaters expands, warrants the County to take on a higher level of responsibility and ensure safety.

The Mayor of the City of Bradenton has asked the County to move forward with the arrangement and in a letter dated November 1, 2018, the County Administrator indictaed that he would request to the BOCC that the County take over operational responsibility effective January 1, 2019.
