This is a work session. No action required.
The County's report, How Will We Grow? A Conversation with the Community, came about from the challenges that arose from the recent boom and bust economy. It provided an introspective look, not only at land development and infrastructure, but also considered growth alternatives and weighed their impacts to infrastructure and services.
A panel from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) reviewed the report and presented its findings to the Board in March 2013. ULI supported the recommendations of the report with additional suggestions on a variety of issues. The Board gave staff direction to move forward with recommendations from the report.
Staff has since implemented a variety of related projects to include redevelopment efforts, updating land development regulations (e.g., Urban Corridors), updating of master plans for utilities and parks (ongoing), Complete Streets design standards, a new impact fee study, and the outreach efforts to engage millennials, to name a few.
Looking back 20 years to 1997, the county has changed significantly. Here in 2017, we are again facing new challenges. Looking forward 20 years to 2037, what will Manatee County look like? Staff will present to the Board a variety of concepts and trends with a plan to outreach and discuss with the community at large.
