Background Discussion
  • Food deserts are geographic areas where access to affordable, healthy food options, like fresh fruits and vegetables, are limited or nonexistent because grocery stores are not nearby.
  • Food insecurity has a high correlation with increased diabetes rates.
  • Persons who live in Food Deserts frequently access fast food for their main meals.
  • Generally, residents living in Food Deserts also have a hard time finding foods that are culturally relevant and that meet their dietary restrictions.
  • The Manatee County Health Department has a focus on identifying and assisting residents in Food Deserts in Manatee County.
