Background Discussion
The Armed Forces Families Foundation contacted the county to discuss a proposed iconic 10k charity run across the Skyway Bridge in spring of 2018.

The Foundation had previously been in contact with the FDOT, FHP and the Governor's office to determine the feasibility of hosting this event, and to determine the process necessary to authorize the event. One component of the application process is to have a letter of non-opposition from all jurisdictions who are adjacent to the Skyway Bridge. These jurisdictions include Manatee County, Pinellas County, Hillsborough County and the City of St. Petersburg. It is the anticipation of the Foundation that this will become an annual event. A Temporary Closure of State Road Permit Application for the event has been filed with FDOT but the letters of non-opposition are required before approval can be granted.

The event is being planned for a Sunday morning with the Skyway Bridge closure beginning at 5:00 am and lasting until noon. Runners would be transported by bus from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg to the south rest area of the bridge. Runners would head north over the bridge to the north with a termination of the run at the north rest area, a distance of 6.2 miles. Runners will then be bused back to the Tropicana Field for a festive family event. About 10,000-13,000 runners are anticipated in the inaugural year. The race organizers will work with Manatee County staff throughout the planning process and ensure coordinated communications.

The Armed Forces Families Foundation is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization that was established to help give the families of service men and women a sense of community support. 100% of all donations received are used solely for structural projects to benefit military families. Additionally, all funds raised remain local.
