Background Discussion

On November 18, 2014, the Board of County Commissioners authorized submission of an application to the U.S. EPA for a FY2015 Brownfields Program grant. The Neighborhood Services Department has been notified of a three (3)-year grant award made to Manatee County in the amount of $500,000.

As lead applicant, Manatee County has joined with the Cities of Bradenton and Palmetto, and with the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization in application for this community-wide coalition assessment grant.

The grant funds will be used to assess potential brownfield sites, in particular for hazardous substances and petroleum, along the Tamiami Trail in the Cities of Bradenton and Palmetto and in unincorporated areas of Manatee County.

The goals of the Brownfields Program are to enhance individual and community health, to restore and protect the environment, and to revitalize the economy.

The U.S. EPA made their announcement of grant recipients on June 4, 2015 and required acceptance of the grant by June 16, 2015, thus the request for the County Administrator or his designee to complete the grant documents during the Board of County Commission recess.
