Background Discussion

In 1973, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted a new Official Seal depicting various elements of Manatee County’s culture, history, economy and environment, and featuring at its center what is commonly referred to as the DeSoto boat. Notwithstanding this vote, which was not supported by an accompanying ordinance, the Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court, as custodian of the County Seal pursuant to Florida Statutes § 28.12, continued to use the prior Seal as the Official Seal based upon a prior act of the BCC decades earlier to adopt the prior Seal as the Official Seal.

Based on the apparent intent of the County Commission in 1973 to have the DeSoto boat logo become the Official Seal of Manatee County, and to ensure that its Official Seal has the legal protections afforded to seals, the Official Seal must be adopted by formal ordinance.

In Sept. 2012, the Board of County Commission formally adopted a new marketing and branding campaign for use by the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The campaign provides a consistent design to market the area as a destination on CVB-sponsored promotional materials for our area.

On Jan. 29, 2013, the Board extended the use of that campaign by approving the use of a similar branding package for Manatee County Area Transit buses, benches, and bus shelters.

In an effort to broaden the campaign and ensure County Government assets, marketing materials, and communication pieces have a consistent design with that of the CVB and MCAT, a new logo is being presented to the Board for consideration.

No special expenses are projected to be incurred as part of the new County branding. The  new logo will be incorporated on new letterhead, business card, and presentations templates for staff use, and the new logo will replace the longstanding DeSoto ship symbol whenever fleet vehicles, uniforms, and facility signs are being re-ordered and updated as part of their routine replacement schedule.
