Action Requested
Authorization to advertise and set a public hearing on February 23, 2016, to consider adoption of Ordinance 16-09, amending Section 2-22-14 of the Manatee County Code; regulating engine compression release braking on 17th Avenue West from 43rd Street West to 34th Street West.

Enabling/Regulating Authority

Florida State Statutes: Chapter 316.006 - Jurisdiction to Control Traffic; Chapter 316.008 - Powers of Local Authorities

Background Discussion
  • A resident requested restricting engine compression release braking due to the noise created by trucks on 17th Avenue West.
  • Staff conducted a traffic investigation to evaluate the area and determine if such a restriction would be appropriate.
  • A vehicle classification study was also performed to determine the amount of truck traffic on 17th Avenue West from 43rd Street West to 34th Street West. Based on the study, the criteria to implement an engine compression release braking restriction were met.
  • Considering that 17th Avenue West is a local roadway, and the aforementioned criteria, staff recommends an engine compression release braking restriction.
