Background Discussion

Manatee County has experienced a continued increase in the indigent population which directly correlates to increased healthcare spending and subsidy.  The Community Paramedicine Program provides a focus on this medically vulnerable population with an attempt to redirect clients to appropriate resources as an alternative to the emergency department, thus decreasing healthcare costs.

The Community Paramedicine Program will offer new services to Manatee County by providing an optimized mix of healthcare and patient navigation at a lower cost than the traditional 911 ambulance service.  During operation, the community paramedic will participate in the 911 system by responding to calls with the intent of redirecting non-emergent patients to appropriate resources.

The Community Paramedic Program is geared towards improving access to appropriate healthcare for Manatee County's medically vulnerable, underinsured, and medically underserved citizens.  Community Paramedicine focuses on fall/injury prevention by conducting home safety inspections, improved disease management for diabetic patients, and utilizes a case management approach for frequent users of the EMS system.  Additionally, the program provides resources for mental health / substance abuse clients, and improves the management of congestive heart failure and other chronic respiratory conditions by providing all patients with the right treatment, the right resource(s), at the right time.

Currently this program is grant funded from an AHCA grant and there has not yet been a source of funding for the sustainability of the program identified.
