MANATEE COUNTY (December 6, 2021) — On Thursday, Dec. 2, Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson appointed Manatee County Commissioner Reginald “Reggie” Bellamy as a member of the Florida Council on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys. The Council was established by the Florida Legislature in 2006 to study conditions negatively affecting black males in the state of Florida.

Since its inception, the Council has concentrated its efforts on developing programs and services based on sound practices that will improve the lives of black males such as reducing high dropout rates in schools, reducing violent crime rates and reducing incarceration rates among black males.

Commissioner Bellamy’s appointment is for a four-year term. When congratulated on the appointment, Commissioner Bellamy stated, "It is an honor to be selected from a pool of very highly qualified candidates. I look forward to the opportunity I have been given to impact the lives of so many black males in the State of Florida."

"Manatee County is once again honored to have one of its own appointed to such a critical statewide initiative. I believe Commissioner Bellamy will be very effective in this role and it is an honor to work alongside him," said County Administrator Dr. Scott Hopes.
