The shrimp plant is a flowering plant that was given its name because many people think the flower looks like a shrimp.  This plant attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.  Many gardeners place this plant in their butterfly gardens.  Florida-Friendly shrimp plants can be grown in Manatee County and can bloom year-round.  It will be killed back by frost but usually returns in the spring.  Shrimp plants can be planted in full sun or part shade.  This plant will grow best in rich organic soil.

You can see this plant and many others in the Educational Gardens at the Agriculture & Extension Service, 1303 17th Street West in Palmetto.  Come visit us; we'd love to see you!
