MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Nov. 14, 2016) – The SRQ Plein Air Painters and Manatee County’s Parks and Natural Resources Department host the Paint Coquina Beach Great American Paint this weekend. Local artists are invited to visit Coquina Beach Saturday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. to paint in the beautiful shoreline surroundings.

“Plein Air Paint Outs are a fantastic concept designed to bring artists out of their studio and into the great outdoors,” said Melissa Nell, Parks and Natural Resources Department Volunteer and Education Division Manager. “En plein air is a French term which means ‘in the open air,’ and painters who enjoy this style of expression utilize the conditions that occur at the time of the painting in order to portray their subject.”

Artists will meet at 9 a.m. near Coquina Beach Café and may paint anywhere on the beach with the exception of protected areas. Artists are asked to sign in at the check in station near the Café, and then will be able to go set up to paint. There is no charge for the event, artists need only bring their easel, chair (if needed), paint and brushes. As the group is sharing the beach, artists are asked to not block the lifeguard lanes or interfere with the wedding planned at the south jetty area. The event will feature a critique at noon.

Coquina Beach features plenty of parking, a restaurant, and restrooms. Alcohol is prohibited on the beach. In addition to painting gear, participants should bring sunscreen and a hat as the Florida sun is strong, even in November. Shady spots are available under the trees; painters wishing to paint on the beach may also want to bring an umbrella.
