Manatee County recognizes our Vietnam veterans during the first officially designated annual "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day". It was 44 years ago on March 29, 1973, that the last remaining American troops withdrew from Vietnam, and President Nixon declared “the day we have all worked and prayed for has finally come.” At the time many of our veterans received a subdued welcome home. Correcting that reception, the Senate approved the bipartisan bill recognizing our Vietnam veterans on February 8, and it was approved by the House on March 21. President Trump signed the bill into effect recently. Welcome Vietnam Veterans Day has been officially recognized since 2011, when the US Senate established the day of recognition.
