VA to Contact Veterans About COVID-19 Vaccine
Posted on 12/30/2020
The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has arrived at 113 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities. Veterans in Manatee will be contacted by the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System with information about how to receive the vaccine.

The VA has been working with the CDC and other federal partners to develop a phased plan to administer the COVID-19 vaccine, which started with Veterans in the Community Living Center (CLC) and frontline VA healthcare workers. Next will be Veterans who are at high risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19.

The VA encourages Veterans to sign up for COVID vaccine updates here. However, this registration is NOT required in order for Veterans to receive the vaccine through the VA.

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System is following CDC guidelines for determining who is considered to be at high risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19. Factors that may influence the risk of severe disease include the following:

  • Age. The risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 increases with age.
  • Existing health problems. People with certain health problems (like diabetes, heart disease, or obesity) have a higher risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19.
  • Other factors that raise a person’s risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19, such as living in a nursing home or other group living facility.
