Old Manatee tour on the Florida Stories Walking Tours appManatee Libraries will host the Old Manatee Picnic at the Manatee Village Historical Park on Saturday, March 14, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, to promote the Old Manatee tour on the Florida Stories Walking Tours app.

Originally launched in the spring of 2019, the Old Manatee Tour is a collaborative effort among Florida Humanities Council, Manatee Village Historical Park, Realize Bradenton, Reflections of Manatee, Bradenton Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Manatee Libraries.

Information about how to access the self-paced tour will be made available by Information Services library team members.

The picnic will be preceded by a presentation in the historic church from Sherry Svekis, Vice President of Reflections of Manatee. The topic will be Angola’s Freedom Seekers and the Florida Underground Railroad. Angola was a community of escaped slaves who lived near the Manatee River in and around what is now Manatee Mineral Springs Park. The area was recently excavated by New College faculty and students to look for evidence of Angola and earlier Native American settlement.

A free picnic lunch (available on a first-come, first-served basis) will be served immediately following the talk in the picnic area. The lunch is sponsored by the Friends of the Central Library. No registration is required.
