AMOB Reading TutorDive Into Summer Reading Program is a collaborative effort developed by Anna Maria Oyster Bar, in partnership with Manatee Libraries, Manatee County Schools and the Patterson Foundation, to combat summer slide. “Summer slide” is the phrase used to define the problem that can develop when children stop learning during the summer and have difficulty remembering what they have learned before the start of the new school year. The children most susceptible to summer slide are ones who come from Title One schools, the majority of which are made up of low-income children.

Reading BraceletsThe Dive Into Reading program aims to improve some of these children’s reading levels by providing a series of one-on-one reading sessions throughout the month of June. Last year, 32 hours of free reading instruction were provided by certified teachers and volunteers, including Manatee Libraries’ Literacy Coordinator, for approximately 75 children who read 1,862 books in 4 weeks, an average of 25 books each.

Student testing conducted in the Fall during the start of the 2017-18 school year found that not only did the students who participated in this program not lose any of their abilities but they actually increased their reading proficiency by 3.2 months.

Because of this success, the program was expanded this year from one location to five: two additional Anna Maria Oyster Bar locations, the South Florida Museum and Gecko’s on SR 70.
