The County Attorney’s Office provides or oversees all legal services required to protect the interests of the County, including management and participation in all litigation in which the County is a party or in which the County’s interests are, or may be, affected. Additionally, the County Attorney's Office renders legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners (Board), the County Administrator, and to County departments, and provides legal advice and representation to advisory bodies under the jurisdiction of the Board, and, if directed by the Board and with the consent of the County Attorney, to constitutional officers and other units of local government where necessary to protect the County's interests.
The County Attorney's Office undertakes any work assignment directed by a majority of the Board consistent with applicable law, the County Attorney Ordinance, and the contract between the County and the County Attorney. When the County Administrator or the various departments of County government require legal services, a written request must be submitted. Legal advice is typically dispensed in writing.
On those occasions when the County Attorney deems it necessary to secure the services of special or outside counsel, the County Attorney's Office supervises, reviews, and coordinates the work of such outside counsel.
