Juneteenth Community Celebration

Juneteenth Community Celebration
Posted on 06/09/2021
Cornbread book series mascot (author Vincent Taylor)Juneteenth is a time for celebration. It commemorates an important day in American history: June 19, 1865, the day the last slaves, living in Galveston, Texas, were freed.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1862 by President Lincoln, the information did not reach all of those impacted until two-and-a-half years later.

Over the years, Juneteenth has become a time of social gatherings. Locally, for the past five years, the Rosalyn Walton Education and Enrichment Services, has put on a Juneteenth Celebration, tied to reading.
