Marvelous Manatee Exhibit “Marvelous darling, simply marvelous" is one way to describe the growth of tourism in the Bradenton Area over the past 120 years. Manatee Libraries’ latest Eaton Historical Exhibit at Downtown Library, “Marvelous Manatee: A History of Tourism,” captures the region's biggest transitions that have shaped it into an increasingly popular destination.

Opening Thursday, February 21, the Marvelous Manatee exhibit will take visitors through the stages of tourism growth, starting with Anna Maria Island beaches at the turn of the twentieth century, followed by the 1920’s Jazz Age when railroads were expanded to south Florida, which created a demand for new hotels and accommodations. It shows how trailer parks in the 1930s made it more affordable for winter-time visitors to the area and explains the impact of both the Interstate system in the 1970s and the rebuilding of the Skyway Bridge in 1987.

The exhibit contains photographs, brochures, pamphlets, clippings, flyers, postcards, souvenir items and more from the Eaton Room Historical Collection and local museums. Many photos, interviews, speeches, maps and postcards which illuminate Manatee County’s local history are accessible online via Manatee Libraries’ Historic Digital Collections.

Various tourism attractions, including Anna Maria Island, South Florida Museum, Village of the Arts, Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training, Manatee Village Historical Park, the Riverwalk, DeSoto National Memorial and DeSoto Heritage Festival and Manatee County Fair are included.

The public is invited to the Opening Reception on Thursday, February 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  which will have brunch items catered by Pier 22, coffee and mocktails (non-alcoholic mimosas and Bloody Marys) will be provided, compliments of the Friends of the Central Library.

Downtown (Central) Library is located at 1301 Barcarrota Blvd. W., Bradenton 34205. The Marvelous Manatee exhibit will continue through end of 2019. The Marvelous Manatee exhibit will continue through end of 2019.
