Confirmation of Public Safety Department Director

Confirm appointment of Robert L. Smith as Public Safety Director with an effective start date on or about April 15, 2015.

Robert L. Smith (Bob) has over 22 years of experience in the public safety field. Bob has a wealth of experience in the 911 and emergency communications arena highlighted by roles with the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International, including Operations Manager and Director of Communications Center and 911 Services, and continues to serve as adjunct faculty with the organization. Bob has served as a county 911 Director and an Emergency Management Agency Coordinator. He has consulted with the US Department of Homeland Security on emergency planning and preparedness efforts and has most recently served as the Emergency Management, Risk Management, and Safety Director for the Arlington, Virginia Public School System. Additionally, he has had operational experience in the fire service holding ranks from firefighter/EMT to Captain as well as 14 years of emergency medical service experience in both fire and county EMS agencies.
Bob has a collaborative approach and understands the importance of working with both internal and external stakeholders. He has a wealth of experience in coordinating multi-agency stakeholder groups and in maximizing the knowledge and experience of the team members. He also has tremendous leadership capacity and will continue to hone the Public Safety team. His background will serve this community well as we embark on a number of critical projects in the public safety and communications realm.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management from Jacksonville (Ala.) State University and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration degree from there as well.
