Background Discussion

The Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) and Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) transit systems continue to collaborate to better serve transit riders in the two-county urbanized area. The two transit systems jointly operate routes connecting both counties including Route 99 serving the U.S. Highway 41 corridor, and a jointly operated fixed route serving Longboat Key. The Route 99 operates between downtown Bradenton and downtown Sarasota and is the top performing route in terms of combined ridership in the urbanized area, providing important connections for residents and visitors, and bringing many riders to area jobs. The Longboat Key route currently provides service between downtown Sarasota and Coquina Beach in Manatee County.

Recently, MCAT and SCAT are collaborating to create a more uniform rider experience and attract more ridership through the Unlimited Access or U-Pass Program. This innovative concept includes a partnership with area colleges including the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, Ringling College, and New College. Continuing efforts include the Regional Bus Pass or "R-Card," which provides monthly unlimited rides for those passengers that utilize both transit systems for their travel, and special event coordination such as the partnership for veterans to travel to annual "Stand Down" events and the annual "Try Transit Day."

Staff from MCAT and SCAT will briefly elaborate on their  recent collaborative efforts as well as upcoming events.
