Action Requested

Authorization to waive the Landfill Tipping Fees in the amount of approximately $6,100.00 for the County dredging and approximately $30,500.00 for the private dredging.  This will permit  the contractor for the Palmetto Skyway Stormwater Discharge Maintenance Project to haul the sediment to the County Landfill to use as daily cover which will offset purchase and use of daily cover purchased annually by Landfill Operations.

Background Discussion
  • April 24, 2012, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) approved a Stormwater Discharge Maintenance Program.  The program objective is to clean the sediment at each of the stormwater outfall pipes discharging into any public navigational canal.

  • The Palmetto Skyway Stormwater Discharge Maintenance Project has been awarded to Gator Dredging.  It is anticipated that approximately 100 cubic yards of sediment will be removed.  This sediment will be dewatered in order to pass the paint filter test before transporting to the County Landfill.

  • Since Manatee County no longer does navigational dredging, staff has encouraged private residents to take advantage of additional dredging while our contractor is in the area removing sediment from our outfalls.  The Landfill Tipping Fee Waiver for this private work is an additional incentive for the residents to take  advantage of this additional dredging.

  • The sediment from the private work will be similar to the material that is removed from the outfalls.  The sediment will have to pass the paint filter test before transporting to the County Landfill.
