In May 2005, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Manatee County, Sarasota County, the City of Sarasota, and the City of Bradenton entered into an Interlocal Agreement for cooperation and coordination in the operation of a Unified Intelligent Transportation Management System. The agreement provides that each party would bear a proportional share of the ongoing operational costs of a Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC) based on the population within each jurisdiction.
As a result, the Sarasota-Manatee RTMC, located within Manatee County’s Public Safety Complex, was created.
Under the direction of the ITSMT, the RTMC serves as the centralized hub of activity for operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the various bi-countywide deployment of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS).
On a daily basis, the RTMC staff uses numerous Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices to monitor and report on traffic conditions and traffic incidents on the regional thoroughfare system, manages network related devices and their communication, and promptly implements any necessary temporary traffic signal timing changes in response to incidents.
In 2016, Manatee County entered into an agreement with the FDOT for partial funding of the RTMC to implement temporary signal timing changes in response to traffic incidents, planned events, and non-recurring congestion.
RTMC staff has prepared the 2017 Annual Report to provide information on the RTMC's mission and history and summarize its achievements in the past year by reporting on how these have benefited the traveling public within the Sarasota-Manatee region.
