The Board of County Commissioners on October 25, 2016, directed the preparation of an ordinance and the scheduling of public hearings to consider a temporary moratorium on the acceptance and processing of new applications for the establishment of medical marijuana processing and dispensing facilities in the unincorporated area of Manatee County for a period of 180 days.
On November 8, 2016, Florida voters approved Amendment 2 to the Florida Constitution. Amendment 2 expands the scope of use of medical marijuana to individuals with "debilitating medical conditions" within a defined set of parameters. Amendment 2 becomes effective on January 3, 2017.
The Board of County Commissioners on December 1, 2016, conducted a public hearing and first reading of Ordinance No. 16-49. At the hearing, testimony was received from the public regarding medical marijuana and Ordinance No. 16-49.
